Time and tide sweep the shores of Hachijojima, an island forgotten at the fringes of Japan.

Far passed the golden age, traces of paradise can still be discerned. Empty hotels face an empty horizon. Shops resemble small museums.

Dust gathers on a man, a store, a town, and an island.

Island of Dust was captured wholly on 16mm film using experimental in-camera techniques.

苔の唄 SONG OF MOSS

Over a hum of summer cicadas and grass gently swishing in the wind, a song faintly beckons from the distant forest. Moss, in soft green folds, wraps gently around the trunks of the yaku sugi, ancient Cryptomeria cedars who stand slowly melting in their own darkness. Muffled birdcalls penetrate an ancient stillness. Auspicious beams of sunshine caress dripping ferns and mushrooms. Rising from an inescapable whisper, the song of moss lulls damp lichens, cautious deer, enduring groves of cedars together into a phantasmal haze of dream and memory.

These dreams of the forest are pressed flat, crushed against frames of film as though summer flowers between pages of a book. “Song of Moss” was photographed entirely on 16mm film using experimental in-camera techniques. It features an original (and hauntingly beautiful) soundtrack composed by Danny Wolfers.

夏のセミの鳴き声、なだらかに風に揺れる草の音の中で、遠くの森から唄がかすかに聞こえてくる。闇の中でゆっくりと溶けていくように佇む屋久杉の幹を、苔が柔らかな緑のひだとなって優しく包み込んでいる。微かな鳥の鳴き声が古代の静けさを伝えている。滴り落ちるシダやキノコには、幸先の良い日差しが降り注ぎ込んでいる。避けられないささやきから立ち上がる苔の唄は、湿った地衣類、用心深い鹿、耐え忍ぶ杉の木立を、夢と記憶の幻想的な霞の中へと誘う。

これらの森の夢は、まるで本のページの間に夏の花が咲いているかのように、フィルムのフレームに刻み込まれています。「Song of Moss "は、実験的なインカメラ技術を用いて、すべて16mmフィルムで撮影されました。また、ダニー・ウォルファースが作曲したオリジナルのサウンドトラックが使用されています。

Arid appearing, desolate, wind-swept… …Its strange rocks, moving, passing, intermingling, made a strong impression on my mind, an impression of warring nature, conflicts of wind and rock, of seas eating into its very vitals, of caves that undermine it, and of the old rock fighting for its very life against the sea.

ZOMPOPA

Zompopa is an experimental natural history documentary produced in association with art collective AK Studio. Besides being a rather strange viewing experience, it contains a number of conceptually linked technical achievements including ultra-violet cinematography, point cloud imaging, and secretive macro-photography techniques. The Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology (OIST) generously provided micro-CT scan ant assets and ant movement studies which were utilized variously in computer generated animation.

Zompopa’s lush and haunting sound design reflects a philosophy of site specific / field recording based electronic music practiced by art collective Arthur King / AK Studio and features unique elements recorded on location in Costa Rica including ultra-sonic ant vocalizations, hydrophone recordings, and binaural recordings.

Emotional Wealth is a Dream

A wandering little film about leaves, rendered gently and naively for musician Danny Wolfers on a cool afternoon in Los Angeles. The camera and a charming set of vintage Japanese anamorphic lenses were borrowed from a jewelry commercial I was to film the following day (and which was ultimately discarded after the season’s designs were sold, leaving only this strange little artifact behind).
